OVERVIEW

Insurance claims generate real-world activity — and with it, real-world emissions.
 

As sustainability expectations continue to reshape the insurance industry, insurers are under growing pressure to understand the emissions associated not only with their operations, but also with the services and activities enabled through claims.
 

While insurance policies themselves are primarily financial instruments, once triggered the claims process can generate significant environmental impact through travel, repairs, remediation, logistics, and supplier activity.
 

Working alongside Charles Taylor, Ecofiniti helped pioneer an innovative approach to quantifying the carbon footprint of insurance claims, focusing on emissions generated during claims and assistance related travel, supplier services, remediation, and property reinstatement.
 

By establishing a robust methodology, leveraging AI, and integrating operational data into a carbon accounting framework, Ecofiniti enabled Charles Taylor to begin measuring, reporting, and reducing claims-related emissions across key service lines.

The project helped address an area of emissions that has historically remained largely unmeasured, supporting the growing industry focus on financed emissions, climate risk, and more comprehensive Scope 3 reporting.
 

By establishing a measurable baseline and increasing visibility into claims-related emissions, the project also enabled Charles Taylor’s clients to redesign policies, premiums, claims services, and supplier networks with sustainability in mind — helping drive greener claims outcomes and more climate-conscious insurance products.

THE  CHALLENGE

Insurance products themselves generally do not generate emissions until a claim is made. However, once a claim is activated, emissions can rapidly accumulate through a wide range of activities, such as:

  • Emergency and assistance travel

  • Flights and accommodation

  • Air ambulances and specialist transport

  • Adjusters travel and equipment

  • Property repairs and reconstruction

  • Supplier logistics and procurement

  • Replacement materials and remediation services
     

Despite the scale of these activities, many insurers and claims management providers still lack the systems needed to quantify the associated carbon impact, and even international recognised protocols still lack the methodology for this. For Charles Taylor, this challenge expanded as well to:

  • Understand emissions generated through claims activity

  • Integrate highly fragmented operational datasets

  • Allocate emissions accurately across services and clients

  • Ensure transparency for insurers and stakeholders

  • Guarantee consistency, governance, and auditability

  • Support evolving sustainability and reporting expectations

  • Create a foundation for future claims decarbonisation strategies

ECOFINITI’S APPROACH

Ecofiniti worked closely with Charles Taylor’s operational and data governance teams to design a practical and scalable claims emissions methodology. The initial phase focused on claims-related travel emissions, particularly within assistance services where travel activity forms a significant part of the claims journey.

1. Claims Travel Emissions Analysis

Ecofiniti developed a framework to collect, clean, structure, and analyse large volumes of claims travel data, including commercial and charter flights, air ambulances, hotel stays, ground transportation, travel routes and durations, assistance-related mobility services, and specialist and non-standard transport activity. 
The methodology enabled carbon emissions to be calculated at claim level, allowing insurers to better understand the environmental impact associated with specific claims activities.

2. Sustainable Property Claims & Green Rebuild Analysis

A second phase of the project explored opportunities to support greener property claims and sustainable rebuild strategies. Ecofiniti helped assess how emissions associated with repair and reconstruction activities could be measured and reduced. This included establishing baseline emissions, assessing suppliers, and. exploring lower-carbon replacement materials and services.

By creating a measurable baseline, it enabled the calculation of potential emissions reductions achieved through greener replacement and rebuild strategies, allowing insurers to compare traditional approaches against lower-carbon alternatives and make more sustainable claims decisions.

3. Data Infrastructure & Reporting

To support long-term scalability, Ecofiniti also helped structure the data and reporting processes required to operationalise claims emissions tracking.

This included data governance support, automated data processing workflows, carbon allocation methodologies, periodic reporting structures, and claim-level emissions reporting capabilities.

The project established a transparent and repeatable methodology that can continue evolving as sustainability reporting requirements mature, as well as other client needs and areas of claims are identified to continue improving.

INNOVATION & INDUSTRY IMPACT

Claims emissions remain one of the least measured areas within insurance sustainability reporting. This project helped position Charles Taylor at the forefront of a rapidly emerging area of the industry by creating an operational framework capable of linking claims management activities with carbon accounting. Importantly, the work also supports broader industry trends around:

  • Sustainable claims management

  • Financed emissions transparency

  • Climate risk analysis

  • Sustainable procurement

  • Data-driven decarbonisation

  • Evolving IFRS and sustainability disclosure expectations
     

The methodology developed through the project creates opportunities for insurers to move beyond high-level estimates and begin making more informed operational decisions around the carbon impact of claims. Ecofiniti is also exploring how AI-enabled capabilities and advanced analytics can further support the automation and enhancement of claims emissions measurement in the future.

By quantifying emissions at a more granular level, insurers can begin evaluating:

  • Greener travel alternatives

  • Lower-carbon suppliers

  • Sustainable rebuild options

  • Claims optimisation opportunities

  • Long-term climate-related risk trends

The visibility created through this process also gives insurers the ability to redesign policies and claims services over time — embedding sustainability considerations directly into areas such as travel arrangements, supplier selection, rebuild standards, accommodation choices, and claims coverage structures.
